The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe Limited (Cottco) was incorporated in 1994 as the successor organisation to the monopoly statutory body, the Cotton Marketing Board. It was privatised in October 1997 and listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange on 1 December 1997.
Cottco is the largest ginner and marketer of cotton in Southern Africa. It is involved in every facet of the cotton production and sales process including the provision of agronomic advisory services, production and merchandising of planting seed, supply of chemicals and fertiliser, raw cotton transportation, cotton ginning and warehousing as well as marketing lint and cotton seed in global markets.
Two of Cottco's ginneries, Cotpro International (Private) Limited in Chinhoyi and Motmate Designs (Private) Limited in Gokwe are wholly-owned subsidiaries with export processing zone status. These, together with seven other ginneries and a seed production house, Quton Seed Company, comprise the Cottco Group's cotton division.
Cottco has a 75% controlling stake in a local spinning mill, Scottco (Private) Limited, which produces yarn mainly for the export market. In addition Cottco acquired a 34.75% shareholding in Seed Co Limited.
Seed Co develops and markets mainly hybrid maize seed and other broad acre crop seeds. |
